Yuya Bay Onsen Hotel Yokikan
Hot Spring Overview
Perched on a hillside overlooking Yuya Bay and the Sea of Japan in Iwagami, Yuya, Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Hotel Yokikan is the sole inn of Yuya Bay Onsen. The hotel takes its name from Yang Guifei (Yokihi in Japanese), the legendary Tang dynasty beauty who, according to local lore, fled to Japan by envoy ship and washed ashore on the nearby Mukatsuku Peninsula at Nison-in Temple. The bathhouse features two grand baths named Genso-no-yu and Yokihi-no-yu, along with three private family baths (Ichi-no-yu, Ni-no-yu, and San-no-yu), all of which command sweeping views of Yuya Bay and the famously pink sunsets that sink into the Sea of Japan. The water is a highly alkaline simple mineral spring with a pH of 9.8, colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Its silky, lotion-like texture has long earned it the nickname Beauty Bath (bijin no yu), leaving skin smooth and supple after soaking. The waters are reputed to relieve neuralgia, muscle and joint pain, poor circulation, and fatigue, and are served in free-flowing source-style. All 39 guest rooms face the sea, and amenities include the Yokihi-en Japanese garden, the kaiseki restaurant Asai, and the Japanese dining hall Amanoyu, immersing visitors in the world of Yang Guifei.
