Kurinodake Onsen Nansyukan
Hot Spring Overview
Kurinodake Onsen Nansyukan is a secluded single-inn hot spring located on the slopes of Mt. Kurino at an elevation of approximately 700m in Yusui Town, Aira District, Kagoshima Prefecture. Part of the broader Kirishima Onsen area, this historic hot spring is where Saigo Takamori, the famous samurai and statesman, stayed for about a month in 1876 to treat his elephantiasis while enjoying hunting. The inn's name 'Nansyu' derives from Saigo's literary name. The inn's greatest feature is its three different spring sources. Sakura-yu is an acidic iron-ammonium-sulfate spring (pH 2.8, source temperature 61.2C) effective for gastrointestinal issues and neuralgia. Take-no-yu is an acidic simple sulfur spring (pH 2.2, source temperature 90C) mud bath effective for injuries, rheumatism, neuralgia, and joint pain, with high cleansing effects beneficial for atopic dermatitis and heat rash. The bath features milky white highly acidic water with white mud settling at the bottom. The steam bath is a natural sauna using volcanic steam, effective for asthma and neuralgia. The specialty dish is steam-cooked chicken (reservation required). Note: Closed since December 2021. Reopening date undetermined.
