Yamakawa Sand Bath Onsen "Sayuri" is a natural sand bathing hot spring facility located on Fusume Coast in Yamakawa, Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, offering a unique therapeutic experience surrounded by the magnificent natural scenery of Mount Kaimon and the East China Sea. The location provides spectacular views of Mount Kaimon, known as "Satsuma Fuji," making it a luxurious bathing experience.
This hot spring has a long history as a natural sand bathing site beloved by local residents for generations. The facility utilizes naturally occurring hot springs that bubble up from the sandy beach of Fusume Coast, creating a natural sauna experience. The facility was renewed and reopened on December 5, 2024.
The sand bathing process involves digging a body-shaped hole in the beach sand, lying down, and being covered with sand heated by hot springs at temperatures of approximately 50-60°C. The heat and weight of the sand cause profuse sweating within 10-15 minutes, promoting blood circulation, detoxification, and enhanced metabolism. The experience of being enveloped in warm sand while listening to the soothing sounds of ocean waves provides an unparalleled natural spa experience.
The therapeutic benefits include relief from arthritis, rheumatism, neuralgia, stiff shoulders, back pain, and sensitivity to cold. The refreshing sensation after emerging from the sand is a unique experience found nowhere else. After sand bathing, visitors can wash off the sand in indoor baths, providing complete physical and mental rejuvenation. This exceptional hot spring facility is nationally recognized and attracts numerous tourists as a popular destination.
