Narada Onsen Shiranekan
Hot Spring Overview
Located at an elevation of approximately 828 meters in the Narada district of Hayakawa Town, Minamikoma District, Yamanashi Prefecture, at the foot of the Southern Japan Alps, Shiranekan is a secluded hot spring facility. The source spring, called 'Nana-fushigi no Yu' (Seven Wonders Hot Spring), was tapped in 1997 from 500 meters underground. It is a sulfur-containing sodium chloride spring (pH 9.1) with a strongly alkaline composition, and the water mysteriously changes color between clear, green, and milky white depending on the weather and temperature. With a source temperature of 47.8 degrees Celsius and a total mineral content of 3,905 mg/kg, the water has a rich, silky texture often compared to bathing in a lotion. The name Narada originates from a legend that Empress Koken, a female emperor from approximately 1,300 years ago, stayed in this area for therapeutic bathing. The spring won 3rd place in the 'Beautiful Skin' category at the 2016 Onsen General Election. It is certified as a hot spring heritage site with 100% free-flowing natural source water. The inn ceased accommodation services in February 2020 and now operates as a day-trip bathing facility.
