Yumata Onsen is a hidden hot spring (“hitō”) located in the Takase Gorge at Hirayumata, Ōmachi City, Nagano Prefecture, with views of Mt. Tsubakuro to the east. Along the way you’ll pass Seiransō, a mountain hut sitting at about 1,534 m on the slopes of the Northern Alps. Beyond Takase Dam, follow the Minamata River and suddenly you’ll see water bubbling up directly from the riverbed. The highlight is the “Funtōkyū,” a natural hot-spring deposit formation designated as a National Natural Monument.
The main facility, Seiransō, was built in 1958 (Shōwa 33). It has indoor baths separated by gender, a dining room, and flush toilets. The wild outdoor baths, however, have no facilities at all—completely untouched nature. They are only available during the hut’s open season (mid-July through mid-October).
Over 1 hour walk
Hidden wilderness
Historic unique spring
You can soak in a sulfur-scented hot spring amidst the grandeur of the Northern Alps. The sculptural beauty of the Funtōkyū is unique, and digging your own open-air bath in the riverbed is a one-of-a-kind experience. After a 2½–3 hour hike you arrive at a completely wild riverside onsen—hence its secret-spring rating of 5 out of 5.
Take a taxi from JR Ōito Line’s Shinano-Ōmachi Station to Nanakura Sansō.
From there, board a designated taxi to Takase Dam.
From the dam, it’s about a 2 hr 30 min walk to Seiransō.
From Seiransō, it’s another 10–15 min on foot to reach the Funtōkyū.
Note that river water levels change year to year, so how and where you cross the river can vary.
