Shimobe Onsen
Hot Spring Overview
Shimobe Onsen is a renowned hot spring village with approximately 1,200 years of history, located in Minobu Town, Minamikoma District, Yamanashi Prefecture. Legend has it that the springs emerged in 836 AD with the appearance of the Kumano deity, and during the Sengoku period, the warlord Takeda Shingen famously used these waters to heal wounds sustained at the Battle of Kawanakajima, earning the springs their reputation as 'Shingen's Hidden Hot Spring.' In fact, the springs were an officially recognized bathing site of the Takeda clan since the time of Shingen's father, Takeda Nobutora. Selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Hot Springs and designated as a National Health Resort, the hot spring village features multiple sources including the traditional low-temperature springs (30-32 degrees Celsius) and the 'Shimobe Okunoyu High-Temperature Source' (51 degrees Celsius, pH 9.3) which began distribution in 2006. The traditional bathing style involves long soaks in the lukewarm waters for therapeutic purposes, alternating between cool and hot baths. The water is classified as an alkaline simple hot spring and is also suitable for drinking. The convenient location within walking distance of Shimobe Onsen Station on the JR Minobu Line adds to its appeal. Shimobe Hotel offers three distinct spring sources including a unique sulfur spring from its garden, with 12 different bathing pools to enjoy.
