Jigokudani Onsen Korakukan

Hot Spring Overview

Korakukan is a secluded one-inn hot spring that was established over 100 years before the Jigokudani Monkey Park was created, known as the Original Snow Monkey Hot Spring Inn. It is a member of the Japan Association of Secluded Hot Spring Inns and has been designated as a Heritage Natural Hot Spring Bath by the Japan Hot Spring Heritage Association. Located along the Yokoyu River valley about 2km from the villages of Kambayashi and Shibu, the inn has maintained its secluded hot spring tradition by carrying supplies on foot and generating its own electricity. Currently operated by the 7th generation innkeeper. Across from the inn on the Yokoyu River bank is the Shibu Jigokudani Geyser, designated as a National Natural Monument in 1927, which shoots water up to 20 meters high. The water quality is sodium-calcium sulfate-chloride spring with source temperatures of 62-76 degrees Celsius and a neutral pH of 7.0. The inn has 4 indoor baths and 2 outdoor baths, including a mixed outdoor bath built jutting out over the river where wild Japanese macaques sometimes come to bathe. This outdoor bath is where monkeys first bathed in hot springs anywhere in the world. The previous innkeeper was a haiku enthusiast, and the wife of poet Bokusui Wakayama visited several times to compose poems. A room used for writing the childrens story Tatsunoko Taro has also been preserved. The inns specialty chimaki rice dumplings originated when the founder offered them to appease a legendary dragon after suffering from floods.
