Akusekijima Island Kaichu HotSpring

Hot Spring Overview

An extremely rare sea hot spring located on the coast of Akusekijima Island in the Tokara Archipelago, Kagoshima Prefecture. Akusekijima is a small volcanic island approximately 210km southwest of the Satsuma Peninsula in the East China Sea, surrounded by steep cliffs and home to about 90 residents. The island is known as "the island of gods," symbolized by the masked deity Boze.

Kaichu Onsen is a completely natural wild hot spring where high-temperature spring water emerges from rocky shores between Yasura Beach Port and Yudamari Onsen. Until the mid-1970s, it was only accessible by traversing through thickets. The Yudamari Line road was developed in 1986 as part of the Special Remote Island Revitalization Project, finally making access easier.

The defining characteristic of this hot spring is its extremely limited bathing window. Only during approximately two hours around low tide does the scalding source water mixing with cold seawater create bathable temperatures. During complete low tide, the source is too hot to enter; during high tide, it becomes submerged and turns into mere seawater bathing. Timing based on tidal conditions is crucial for successful bathing. Wave calmness is also essential, and bathing may be impossible depending on weather and sea conditions.

Surrounded by rocks of various sizes, the unique appeal lies in the liberating experience where the hot spring and sea surface become one. An upside-down jellyfish hot spring mark painted in red on the rocks serves as a landmark. There are no facilities such as changing rooms or privacy screens—this is a completely natural wild hot spring experience. Swimwear is recommended.

Akusekijima itself receives few tourists and can only be reached by ferry twice weekly, making it an isolated environment with extremely limited visitors. The hot spring pool sometimes gets buried by rocks during typhoons, constantly changing with natural forces, becoming legendary among secret hot spring enthusiasts. The island is also known as a hot spring treasure trove, featuring Yudamari Onsen and sand bath hot springs.

Kaichu Onsen ranks among Japan's most extreme secret hot springs due to its access difficulty, limited bathing window, and completely wild character.

The geographical isolation as a remote island accessible only twice weekly by ferry, the constraint of a mere 2-hour bathing window around low tide, and the bathing experience in complete nature without even changing facilities represent an ultimate secret hot spring experience distinct from modern facilities. The instability of being subject to natural forces, such as the pool being buried during typhoons, enhances its value as a hidden gem.

However, due to extremely strict physical and temporal constraints, reaching this hot spring becomes an adventure rather than simply enjoying the bath itself. This is an ultimate conditional secret hot spring where multiple conditions—tides, weather, ferry operations—must align for bathing to be possible.

Access Information

Ferry: Take the Toshima Village ferry "Ferry Toshima 2" from Kagoshima Main Port South Pier for approximately 11 hours to Akusekijima Yasura Beach Port. Service operates twice weekly (departing Mondays and Fridays at 23:00, arriving around 10:00 the next day). Also accessible from Amami Oshima Naze Port twice weekly. Ferry fares vary by island; to Akusekijima, approximately 8,000 yen for first class, 4,000 yen for second class one-way.

Island Transportation: About 5 minutes by car or 15 minutes on foot from Yasura Beach Port to Kaichu Onsen. From Kami-shuraku (island center), approximately 20-25 minutes on foot (downhill). Transportation arrangements can be made through guesthouses.

Important Notes: Frequent cancellations and significant delays due to bad weather require confirmation with the ferry company before departure. With a one-week gap until the next ferry, missing the boat forces extended stays. The island has no shops, convenience stores, or restaurants, so staying at a guesthouse is strongly recommended.
