Hatogayu Onsen
Hot Spring Overview
Hatogayu Onsen is a secluded single-inn hot spring nestled along the Uchinami River gorge at approximately 538 meters elevation in the deep mountains of Ono City, Fukui Prefecture. The spring was discovered during the Kaei era (1848-1854) when an injured dove was observed healing its wounds in the waters, giving the inn its name meaning 'Dove's Bath.' A member of the Japan Association of Secluded Hot Spring Inns (Nihon Hitou wo Mamoru Kai), the inn was completely destroyed by an avalanche in February 2018 but was magnificently rebuilt in 2021 with strong local support. The spring water is classified as sodium-chloride and bicarbonate cold mineral spring with a source temperature of approximately 14.2 degrees Celsius, heated for bathing. The colorless, transparent water has a gentle feel on the skin and is said to be effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, and poor circulation. Surrounded by the rich nature of Hakusan National Park, the area is particularly beautiful during fresh green and autumn foliage seasons. The inn is also known for its mountain cuisine featuring river fish such as char and yamame trout, with mountain vegetables in spring and mushrooms in autumn. Although closed during winter due to heavy snowfall, guests can fully enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of this hidden hot spring during the operating season.
